First United Methodist Church shows their love and concern for those around the world by supporting and participating in many mission projects outside our community. Pictured at the right is the group who went to New Orleans in April 2007 to assist in the Hurricane Katrina rebuilding project.
United Methodist Church Missions and Ministries
First UMC Palestine supports Lon Morris College, Omega House, Fisher House, Methodist Retirement Home and the Methodist Home for Children.
Interdenominational Missions and Ministries
First UMC Palestine supports the Gideons, Mercy Ships, the Heifer Project and other interdenominational ministries active locally and nationally in spreading the Good News around the world.
Partners in Mission (PIM)
This program of the UMC Texas Annual Conference coordinates mission projects for conference churches and individuals to participate in. Through PIM, within Texas, we have participated in Border Mission, on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. Through border mission efforts we provide resources to assist in education efforts in those areas. There are future plans to become involved in ongoing housing projects. We participate in the Harvest Share Program, which gathers resources such as old cell phones, eye glasses, and hearing aides to be reconditioned and used in ministry. PIM has allowed our congregation to become involved, as individuals or in teams, in hands on mission work. These efforts have been local and international. Three hundred and sixty five days a year, PIM provides mission opportunities for those who seek them.
UMCOR Sager Brown Depot
The Depot in Baldwin Louisiana receives, processes and distributes a variety of stock items directed toward disaster relief around the world. This church has been directly involved in providing resources to build “Flood Buckets”. These buckets contain the essential to begin the cleanup efforts associated with flooding from many sources and were a great help during the cleanup of the Katrina Hurricane in New Orleans. We will also send teams to the depot to assist in sorting, packaging and warehousing donations.
UM Army
This project of the United Methodist Church has been adopted by First Church as an essential youth ministry. This ministry allows our youth, and adult support persons, to travel to another area of Texas in ministry. Teams of youths and adults go into communities, to the homes of elderly and disabled to do repair work on the homes. They paint, roof, build steps and wheelchair ramps, clear brush and any number of other jobs to meet specific needs. First Church also acts as a Host Church in this program as youth from outside our community come here to do similar work. Volunteers are always needed to support these efforts.
